Things to Consider

In this review, we took a look at ten best coffee grinders for French press. Even though they are designed to do the same task, each of them has its pros and cons. Many factors depend on your preferences, and you still may have some questions about the features to look for. This buying guide is created to help you make the right choice.

Picking the best coffee grinder for French press coffee

10 Best Coffee Grinders for French Press - Even Grind Every Time!Taking the process of buying a coffee grinder lightly will have you regretting your purchase because the product you buy will lack some essential features. That is a situation you should try to avoid by being prepared with the right information beforehand. This involves knowing what to look out for in a coffee bean grinder for French press coffee. Some key points include the type of grinder, the consistency of grind, capacity, burrs types and materials, and other things. Stick with us to learn more!

Type of the coffee grinder

There are two leading types of coffee grinders available in the market. The first is the electric type, and this requires proximity to a socket to function. Various models have different power consumption needs, and as such, you should avoid them if you are far away from the energy source. One benefit of owning such a gadget is the consistency of the grind. The rotation of the burrs remains constant once you have put in the settings. These require less attention and time as all you have to do is set a timer and the grind type before pressing the start button. After that, you can go about other duties, and once the device is done, it will shut down on its own.

The second type of grinders is the hand crank coffee grinder for French press coffee or, as it is commonly referred to, the manual grinder. Just like the name suggests, you have to use your hands to grind the beans you put into this machine. Consequently, this will help you conserve energy. This type of device is not well known for consistency. As such, you may find a few lumps here and there in your coffee grinds. Furthermore, you are better off not using the manual grinder with large quantities of coffee since you will get tired cranking up the unit, and the resulting coffee will lack the consistency.

Nevertheless, if you need a cup or two of coffee a day for a single individual, this is one way to save money as they are cheaper to purchase.

Consistency of the grind

By grinding the coffee, people ensure the maximum extraction when the ground coffee comes into contact with hot water. If there is a little inconsistency, it can affect the quality of the brew negatively. Nevertheless, most devices can produce a consistent grind unless some of their parts are damaged. If you find that the device no longer offers even and consistent grind, you should contact the manufacturer for repairs, replacement or you can start budgeting for a new one.

French press coffee requires even coarse grind, which is not hard to achieve with the coffee grinders from our review. Each unit allows you to select from multiple grind levels from ultra-fine to extra-coarse. That way, you can compare the consistency of the grind, taste of the coffee and adjust these settings more precisely if you need it.

Containers size

10 Best Coffee Grinders for French Press - Even Grind Every Time! There are two containers on most coffee grinders. The first will hold the beans before they are ground, and the second will contain the grind. The one for coffee beans needs to be larger as the whole coffee beans take up a lot of space. When it is ground, it leaves less space in between particles and thus can fit in a smaller container. If you often make coffee for a single person at a time, then small container sizes will work just fine. However, if the coffee you need is going to serve a few individuals, you can opt for larger containers. The De’Longhi Ariete Coffee Grinder has the highest capacity among all the devices from our list.

Burrs type

Conical burrs are the most common. Grinders with conical burrs boast of more consistent grinds and are thus the more preferred options. Experienced baristas claim that these grinders are easier to adjust.

On the other hand, units with flat burrs tend to be cheaper than their counterparts. They allow coffee to retain more dark notes. Every now and then, you can find a device with flat burrs like the Cuisinart DBM-8. Nevertheless, sometimes they can leave chunky bits of coffee in the grind, which may result in problems during the brewing process.

Burrs material

The burrs material is something you should deliberate on before making the purchase. With manual grinders, it is common to find them using ceramic burrs, as is the case with the Khaw-Fee HG1B Manual Coffee Grinder. However, with an electric grinder for French press coffee, manufacturers prefer to use more durable materials such as steel. This is seen in the Capresso Infinity Conical Burr Grinder. Friction plays a significant role in influencing the burr material.

If you use an electric motor to power your device, there will be many more rotations of your burrs. As such, the friction is higher, and that may lead the components to wear out. The same is not the case for manual grinders as the rotations are slower.

10 Best Coffee Grinders for French Press - Even Grind Every Time!If you are buying equipment for your home, this is probably not what you will be looking for. Nevertheless, some people travel a lot and would appreciate the ability to grind their beans for French press coffee anywhere in the world. Therefore, the portability of the gadget may prove crucial. Manual grinders tend to be compact enough to fit in a suitcase and light enough to carry around. A device like the Porlex Mini Coffee Grinder might even fit in your pocket. More significant electric devices may only be suitable for sitting in your kitchen all year long.

Ease of use

You don’t want to spend hours trying to figure out how a particular device works. It helps to have one that is simple to operate as even the kids in the house will be using it. Nevertheless, most tools of this caliber, especially the ones on our list are not complicated at all. There is often a grind level switch, a timer, and a start button. This is common to those of the electric variation.

Manual products are easier to figure out. All you would need is to put the coffee beans in the designated slot, seal it, set the grind type, and start rotating or cranking up the handle.

Most Baratza models like the Encore and the Virtuoso+ have 1-year warranties. Your first pick should have at least a similar or even a more extended warranty. You must check what each warranty covers in terms of whether the manufacturer will replace the whole product or they only offer repairs. This way, in case your product gets damaged, you will know exactly what kind of assistance to expect from the makers.

Extra features

The best devices to own will have a useful feature unique to them. An illustrative example presents itself with the OXO Brew Conical Burr Coffee Grinder, which provides a one-touch start timer that remembers your last setting. If you are looking for a noiseless grinder, JavaPresse Manual Burr is what you need for making perfect French press coffee.

Likewise, you should look for bells and whistles with each product you consider buying. That way, you end up with an excellent value for money.

Price ranges

If you are looking for an electric device with conical burrs, you should budget at least 100 dollars. The best example of this category is our editor’s choice – the Capresso Infinity Conical Burr Grinder.

You can add more money to this amount if you want to purchase higher-end models like the Baratza Virtuoso+ that will cost you about 250 dollars. If you are strapped for cash, you can get a manual device for between 20 to 30 dollars.

Also, there are exceptions for electric grinders as those with flat burrs, like the Cuisinart DBM-8, are more cheaply priced. Whatever the device you go for, ensure it is one that you can pay for comfortably.

If the goal is to make French press coffee, you are better suited by a coarse or a medium-coarse grind. Remember that the grind should be even. Some people might find it strange that making this drink requires a high-quality coffee grinder. Inconsistent grind contains different particles and even dust, which makes your coffee muddier and bitterer.

You can choose a bit finer grinds if you like your drink to have more flavors. Don’t fear that the coffee grounds can get into your cup. Most French presses can hold all the particles.

It depends on how fine you want the grind and the equipment you are using. Each grinder offers a different speed. However, grinding coffee is not a process that should take more than five minutes. While grinding, you can check the grind size from time to time, and you will see when it is ready. There should be a consistent, coarse grind without chunks or dust.

Yes, it is possible to do this. However, coffee aficionados will tell you that the beverage smells and tastes better when freshly ground. This is because all the flavor and aroma are still in the grinds but will dissipate over time.

The best way to store fresh ground coffee for the long term is to put it in the airtight container or a ziplock and hide it from the sunlight in a dry place. The humidity level and the temperature should be constant. Don’t put ground coffee in the fridge and keep it away from odors.

Our Verdict

So, which product should you pick? We have reviewed ten best grinders for French press coffee and chose three favorites among them.

The Capresso Infinity Conical Burr Grinder is a great product in comparison to a lot of the other options out there. Perhaps most notable is the gear reduction motor. Where other options will provide fast grinding speed too, the manufacturer for this product knows that this can result in loss of flavor and aroma. As such, the gear reduction motor slows the movement of the burr so that these two elements are preserved. You will love that the device is easy to clean.

Another product that we love is the OXO Brew Conical Burr Coffee Grinder. If you want to brew your coffee the same way every single day, then this device will make things remarkably easier for you. This is because it remembers the last setting you used. As such, all you need to do every morning is wake up and press a button. Don’t forget to refill the bean container from time to time.

If a manual device is what you’d rather have the JavaPresse Manual Burr Coffee Grinder would be an ideal purchase. The best aspects of this device are the cheap pricing point, ease of use, and the noiseless mechanism.

Given that there are seven more models we consider the best coffee grinders, you are bound to find one that you like. We hope that the information from this review was useful and helped you to make your final decision!

  1. Can you use a regular coffee grinder for French press coffee?

    • Nehemiah Murphy October 20, 2021

If you mean a blade grinder, then yes, but I would not recommend it. Sure, a blade grinder is less expensive than a burr grinder. However, it doesn’t “grind” your coffee beans. It smashes the beans into little pieces with two moving blades. This technique has one significant flaw. By repeatedly chopping the beans at high speed, you end up with grinds which are inconsistent in size from powder to chunks. Using this method, you will not get the best flavor out of your beans, and the powder-size particles may clog your French Press.

      • Yeah, I’d rather go for a burr grinder too. Burr coffee grinders are more consistent than blade grinders, and they produce less heat, which preserves the flavor of the coffee. Also, they are less likely to jam and are much quieter when in use.

    • I recommend using a blade grinder if you are making only a French press. It is easy to use and inexpensive. I started with this kind of grinder, and it worked well for me. If you have more money, then get a burr grinder o that you can do more things with it. A good burr grinder will be expensive – around $100 or more.

  2. Cameron Donaldson October 29, 2021

I’m curious, how do manual coffee grinders work exactly?

    • Kassandra Cooley November 6, 2021

They are the same as electric ones, except you have to turn the grinding mechanism by hand instead of pressing a button.

    • The manual coffee bean grinder has a crank on the top. You pour beans under it, and turn the crank. It starts to grind them, and they fall into a box. This method is a bit slow but it is cheaper because you do not have to use electricity.

  3. I don’t often drink coffee at home, so I’m thinking about buying a cheap coffee grinder for occasional use. Do hand grinders produce the same results as electric grinders?

    • I’ve had mixed success with some of the top hand grinders on the market. For example, when I put pressure on one side over the other for stability it might move the burrs and make an uneven grind. To fix this, try to find a secure spot to hold your grinder so that you don’t have trouble turning the crank of your handle.

    • Some people prefer to use a manual grinder because they think it does a better job. But not all people feel the same way. It is up to what you need from your grinder. If you make coffee every day, an electric grinder is better for you because it will save time and give you consistent results every time.
