Review

The De’Longhi EC702 is a manual espresso machine with a stainless steel boiler that facilitates an easy coffee-making process. It regulates itself for the most part, with a few personalization options to really drive home the machine’s manual point and produce two espresso shots at once with a patented dual filter holder.

De’Longhi offers a range of espresso machines and appliances, with machines for both the coffee beginner and the coffee connoisseur. This particular entry-level boiler has a number of redeeming qualities and downfalls that we will highlight in our review.

Overall Performance

Delonghi EC 702 Coffee Machine ReviewThe EC702 is rated second in the Manual Espresso Machines category on Amazon. It brews both espressos and cappuccinos. Considering its low cost, the EC702 makes great coffee and regulates itself for the most part. Although it is made less durable with plastic, it has a stainless steel boiler that holds its own well over time.

The pump pressure goes up to 15 bars, which means it produces 217 psi. Although 9 bars is widely considered the sweet spot, it is likely that because this is a cheaper domestic machine, it needs a higher initial bar count to later reach the lower count and hit the perfect amount of pump pressure. It also has an input power of 1100W. Considering this amount fits perfectly in the typical range of 550 to 1500 Trusted Source Electric Appliances PROCESS AND TECHNOLOGY STATUS – This brief deals with residential and commercial electric appliances other than space heating and cooling devices, water heaters, lighting, cold appliances, cooking devices, washing machines, dish washers and dryers, which are dealt with by ETSAP R02 to R09, respectively. Among remaining electric appliances, electric irons, coffee machines and vacuum cleaners are the most energy-consuming and significant products. iea-etsap.org , this is a significant input power for a machine of this size.

The frother included works excellent with both regular milk and many vegan alternatives like oat milk and almond milk, making it a great option for anybody on a plant-based diet. The bubbles are larger than many other frothers, so be sure to keep in mind that you won’t be able to do any latte art on your coffee.

There is no temperature control or espresso size selector, nor is there an adjustable valve. However, the machine pulls a hot shot, and the tools that are included (like the steam wand and the pressurized portafilters) don’t take extra experience to work with. Thanks to said tools, the machine produces a rich espresso shot with crema to boot and great frothed milk for the price.

The product comes with a 7-page guide detailing how to use the machine and how to brew the perfect espresso or cappuccino to improve your experience with the machine. You’ll definitely need to take a few minutes to read the instructions before delving into your first espresso project!

Design

Delonghi EC 702 Coffee Machine ReviewComing in as a boxy design with a shiny finish, the De’Longhi EC702 is not the sleekest option but still provides a sense of maturity and minimalism. It uses stainless steel in the front paneling and cup warmer, while the rest is silver plastic. It has grates on the bottom to catch coffee leaks conveniently, and it comes with a set of knobs to adjust the temperatures of water and steam.

The boiler is stainless steel for durability with two thermostats so that the temperature of water and that of steam have separate controls. The company has also patented a dual-function filter holder so that you can brew two shots at once, and De’Longhi uses a 44-oz. water tank in this product to get the most out of the boiler. The water reservoir itself is on the right side of the product and slides out conveniently.

There is a tamper for pressing the grounds in evenly, but because there are pressurized portafilters to help with the consistency of the grounds, this feature seems like an extraneous one. You would be better off just using the pressurized portafilter feature to get your coffee grounds to produce a rich shot.

Weight & Dimensions

The machine is 11 pounds and is 11 x 9 x 12 inches, making it a good fit for a large countertop but not a great match if you need to conserve counter space. It should fit under most cabinets. For comparison, the EC702 is bigger than your average toaster but smaller than your average microwave. However, we suggest that you measure your counter space before purchasing just to make sure that everything fits accordingly.

As for the weight, the machine is generally lightweight and easy to transport, and it is compact enough to be easy to carry as well.

Type of Coffee Used

You can use either pods, such as Easy Serve Espresso pods, or coffee grounds to make your espresso. E.S.E. pods are typically around $14 for a pack of 18 or proportionally less in bulk, while coffee grounds are around $10 for 30 ounces. With the pressurized portafilter feature, you can easily use this machine as a beginner with lower-quality grounds.

We recommend using fresh grounds to make your coffee, as you’ll have a richer shot with a better result, but if you’re looking for a convenient cup of joe, the E.S.E. pod option is great for you. However, instant coffee should not be used with this machine to avoid disappointment from the result, so stick with the grounds.

Brewing Speed

Delonghi EC 702 Coffee Machine ReviewBecause of its boiler, the De’Longhi EC702 boils its water once and then retains the heat for the rest of the round of shot-making. Although it takes some time to get the boiler going to begin with—with 5–15 minutes of preheating before use—the wait for each subsequent espresso shot is short, making this a great machine if you host multiple people to drink coffee. Because it does not automatically turn off, the espresso machine will keep your boiler hot if you want to keep it on for minutes at a time between pulling shots.

Servings Volumes

There is both a small filter for 1 cup of ground coffee or one convenience pod and a large filter for 2 cups of ground coffee. The espresso machine also has the capacity to brew two shots at once, a great asset for those hosting events.

Interface

Much of the De’Longhi EC702 is regulated by the machine itself to level the learning curve of making espresso, but there are some knobs that control water and steam pressure, as well as an on/off button. There is no digital interface on this product, so if you’re looking for a more personalized cup of coffee, this may not be the option for you.

Delonghi EC 702 Coffee Machine ReviewEase of Cleaning

The EC702 comes with a removable water tank and drip tray, with a light that indicates when change is necessary, making it especially easy to clean. The machine has many dishwasher-safe parts that you can remove and easily clean. While it may be annoying to remove all the dishwasher-safe parts to clean, it is easier to have those removable interiors if there is any leakage or spills. You only need to fully descale the machine every two months or so, making it convenient and easy.

Warranty

All manual espresso machines have a one-year warranty of free parts and labor on the product if there are any issues with it. This warranty only applies if the machine has been used correctly and implies that De’Longhi can either fix the machine or replace it entirely. With proper cleaning, this machine should be durable enough to last you well over a year, although it isn’t as good as many others at higher price points on the market.

There is no order cancelation or exchange capability once you’ve placed your order, but there is a return policy. The company accepts the product, unused, in its packaging, within 30 days of the invoice. De’Longhi will pay for returns if a good is damaged.

Accessories Included

Along with the machine, the product comes with a stainless steel cup warmer, a plastic tamper, and a measuring spoon. It has a cappuccino frother (a Pannarello steam wand that swivels) and steam nozzle for your cappuccino needs. The glassware pictured in the display photo is not included.

Delonghi EC 702 Coffee Machine ReviewPrice Tag

The manual espresso machine costs $229.95, which is definitely on the low end of the quality manual espresso machine spectrum considering that domestic manual espresso machines can garner a price tag of around $3,000. Espresso machines for commercial use can garner up to around $40,000 apiece, and good automatic machines come at a price of around $200 anyway, so we can’t argue with this price tag.

Pros Cons
We love how you can use either ground coffee or pods, making this a great option if you like to mix things up. The machine doesn’t automatically turn off like many others of its kind do, which may bother some.
The machine is great for beginners because it controls many of the complicated variables that make the espresso process difficult, regulating both the pressure and the water used for each espresso shot. The De’Longhi EC702 takes up a large amount of counter space for what it is, coming in at almost a foot in two dimensions.
The pressurized portafilters allow for richer coffee made from any kind of grounds by filtering the coffee into a chamber and adding pressure until it drips through the bottom. This makes the process easier for beginners. Because the espresso machine regulates so much of the process, it does not give you the same freedom that a barista would have if you’re looking for that.
Milk frothing is a great addition to this machine, an essential part of it. The froth produced is not fine, but it is good for drinking. There is no built-in grinder, so if you’re looking to do that yourself, you won’t have any luck with this machine.
You can brew two shots at once with the dual feature. The machine is made primarily from plastic, making it less durable and of lower quality than some others on the market.
There have been reports of leaking in multiple reviews.

Conclusion

After review, it is clear that the De’Longhi EC702 is a great option for an affordable entry-level coffee machine. With its short wait time for subsequent shots and regulation of many difficult coffee-making features, this machine is great for beginners who host events frequently. It is not a great option for those who are willing to pay a higher price for a more personalized experience and more durability.

Of course, there are pitfalls to this contraption, like the wait time and off button, but you’ll be hard pressed to find another product of this quality at this price point.
