In the last few years, cold brew coffee has taken the world by storm Trusted Source How Cold Brew Changed the Coffee Business At All Day, a coffee shop in Miami that’s on the must-visit list of coffee fanatics, cold brew is the foundation of the menu. www.nytimes.com . Seemingly overnight, people became obsessed with this new technique for making coffee. While traditional iced coffee is made by brewing hot coffee and cooling it, cold brew is a bit different.

As the name suggests, cold brew coffee is made by brewing coffee with cold water. Using cold water during the brewing process eliminates some of the bitter taste that normal iced coffee has. If you want to make it even better, though, give Salted Caramel Cream Cold Brew a try.

Making your own cold brew is pretty straightforward, but it does take about 12 hours! If you feel up to the challenge, be sure to select a rich, bold flavor profile. We prefer using this coffee from Blue Mountain. If you wonder why it’s our favorite, this particular blend has over 3,000 reviews and a nearly 5-star rating.

What is this drink?

Salted Caramel Cream Cold Brew is an amazing drink that combines the deep, intense flavor of cold brew with light and fluffy caramel cream. While we can thank Starbucks for bringing this delicious treat into our lives, it’s super easy to make at home, too.

While the cold brew part of this equation is (obviously) super important, the frothy cream is the real star of the show. There are a couple of ways to make the cream, but just note that if you prefer non-dairy creamers, you’ll want to opt for a rich vegan cream instead of oat milk or another milk alternative. The reason for this is that you’ll be using your milk (or substitute) to make the foam, and some ingredients hold their foam structure better than others.

Starbucks ingredients

Starbucks lists its ingredients for all drinks on its website, which makes finding good alternatives pretty simple. Many Starbucks ingredients are available for purchase online or in their cafes, but these can be pricey. According to their site, Starbucks uses the following ingredients:

  • Cold Brew Coffee
  • Salted Caramel Cream (made with Vanilla sweet cream, vanilla syrup, caramel syrup, and milk)
  • Vanilla Syrup
  • Ice

Copycat ingredients

If you can’t make it to Starbucks (or you’d rather make your own Salted Caramel Cream Cold Brew), you’ll only need a few things to create this recipe.

Caramel syrup

You’ll need caramel sauce or caramel syrup. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can try making your own caramel syrup, but it can be tricky and can go wrong quickly. This is because caramel requires melting sugar at high heat with constant stirring, but it can burn in the blink of an eye.

We prefer using caramel syrup for this part of the recipe. While we normally opt to make things from scratch when we can, caramel syrup is one of the few things that actually tastes better when you buy it pre-made. You can find our preferred syrup here.

Cold-brew coffee

If you prefer to make your own coffee, you should start the cold brewing process at least 12 hours before you intend to make your drink.

Cold brew isn’t difficult to make, but there’s no way to rush the process.

Alternatively, you can purchase pre-made cold brew coffee from the supermarket. Pre-made cold brew either comes ready-to-drink or in a concentrated form. If you decide to purchase rather than make your own, make sure you read the label closely. You definitely don’t want to use 1 cup of unmixed concentrate rather than the properly mixed version!

Ice

You don’t need fancy ice for this drink, but it can make it more fun. If you have any fun ice trays lying around, you can use the cubes to bring your coffee to the next level. Another idea is to use ice cubes made of frozen coffee, but this step is not required.

If you’re making your own (non-coffee) ice, use filtered water for the best results.

Vanilla sweet cream

To make this vanilla sweet cream, you’ll need heavy cream, milk, and vanilla syrup. The magic happens when you combine all three ingredients into frothy goodness. To do this, you can use a milk frother, but if you don’t own one of those, a hand mixer, blender (traditional or immersion), or even a whisk and strong arm will work just fine.

For the vanilla syrup, we prefer to use the vanilla version of the Monin syrup we mentioned in the caramel syrup section.

Salt

Salt is truly the cherry on top of this recipe. It will be delicious with or without it, but it adds a layer of depth to the flavor profile that the unsalted version just can’t match.

For this reason, we recommend using good quality, flaky sea salt. You can use table salt if you absolutely have to, but we highly recommend splurging on the good stuff.

Instructions

This drink will make two 8 oz. drinks or one 16 oz. drink. The most complicated part of this recipe is the sweet cream, and that part is still quite easy.

To make this drink like Starbucks, follow these simple steps.

Making vanilla cream cold foam

The first step is making the vanilla cream cold foam. To make the vanilla cream cold foam, you’ll need:

  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • Two tablespoons 2% milk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons vanilla syrup

Combine all ingredients in a jar or bowl and whip/blend/shake to mix. The ideal texture will resemble melted ice cream.

Adding caramel syrup to the cup

Next, you’ll want to add your caramel syrup to your desired cup.  You should add as much as you want, depending on your preference for sweetness, but we usually add about two pumps. If your bottle doesn’t have a pump nozzle, you can measure 2 tablespoons of caramel syrup and add them to the cup.

Pouring in cold brew coffee

Again, you should add as much coffee as you intend to drink, but a good benchmark is roughly 1 cup of cold brew to start. You’ll want to pour this into your cup directly onto the syrup.

Filling cup with ice and topping with foam

After adding your coffee, add your ice. Scoop as much ice as will fit into the cup while leaving about 1/2 – 1 inch of space at the top.

Next, you’ll want to pour your vanilla cream cold foam slowly. If you add this too quickly, you’ll end up mixing the drink up too soon. Pouring the cream in slowly will allow it to sit nicely on top of the cold brew.

Salt

Once you’ve added the coffee, ice, and cream, you’ll top with a pinch of salt and enjoy!

Final thoughts

If you love iced coffee and sweet treats, you’ll love this refreshing salted caramel cream cold brew. This Starbucks copycat is so close to the original that we doubt you’ll be able to tell the difference!

Not only is the vanilla sweet cream foam a delectable part of the recipe, it’s easy to make in larger quantities too. If you decide to make more of the sweet cream, try quadrupling the recipe above. You can then store it in the fridge for 4-7 days. We like it frothed and unfrothed, so be sure to try it both ways!

This simple salted caramel cream cold brew recipe is easy and delicious. Whether you’re making it as a treat for yourself or to wow your friends and family, this recipe is sure to become a staple.
